Kalamkari – Andhra Pradesh

Kalamkari is created using natural dyes from roots, leaves, and iron, applied with a bamboo pen or through block printing. The two traditions—Machilipatnam (block-printed) and Srikalahasti (hand-painted)—carry detailed narratives, often inspired by mythology.

The making is slow, moving through multiple stages of dyeing, washing, and fixing colour. Each step builds depth, and each line holds the mark of the hand.

Worked on cotton or silk, every piece takes time—measured not in hours, but in patience.
